Anomalous Audio The importance of understanding this phenomena and classifying it accordingly is paramount. Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) is the most common paranormal acronym when classifying audio and frequently inappropriately used.
EVP is said to be heard only during playback and never at the time of the recording but without monitoring at the time of the recording, how can we say with assurance that it can’t be heard. Although it’s rare, our team has encountered samples that were heard “real-time” and should be addressed as Aural Voice Phenomena (AVP) instead. Additionally the acronym (SSP), Spontaneous Sound Phenomena is necessary to include noises from other sources such as imprints of canon fire, horse charges or from animals ecetra.
Furthermore many investigators imply that the voices are from discarnate spirits but labeling it as such is far too finite. Pioneers in EVP research such as Friedrich Jürgenson, Konstantin Raudive & Sarah Estep believed that the source of these strange voices could have origins from space as well. In all fairness, no one can say with certainty because the captures generally are very brief and seldom respond to questions.
Whether is coincidental, we’ve found on several occasions evidence that points to the belief system of many parapsychologists. Some of these captures could be imprints from the living as well.
The skeptics evaluate these as the result of radio frequency interference, inferior audio equipment or electronic glitches. In all fairness, they have a right to believe these sources to be responsible but I have personally heard real-time my first and last name called out at 3:00 am while recording in an empty house.
Our team utilizes high grade analog recording equipment with dedicated microphones and properly shielded electronics. We’ve chosen this path in hopes of decreasing false positives prevalent in lower quality equipment.
Classification System
Both Sarah Estep and Konstantin Raudive worked together on a classification system for EVP to simplify a complicated and confusing grading system that was a mathematically based formula initially.
A very clear voice heard by three people agreeing entirely on the content. This requires no software to enhance the sample whatsoever. A Class “A” is the rarest of all audio captures.
A very strong capture but different opinions on the content are evident. This may require some software intervention but frequently as loud as a Class “A”. Class “B” audio captures are more frequently encountered than the elusive Class “A”.
Often heard as faint voices or whispers without agreement of the content by 3 independent investigators upon review. These captures are the most frequent but seemingly disappear when higher grade equipment is used.
Final Words
We strongly suggest when reviewing our audio samples to wear heaphones while listening. Anomalous audio tends to have defining characteristics of very flat vocal banding and once speakers are used as the source of playback, the quality and definition of the sample deteriorates. Headphones offer a much higher range of frequency sampling.
All our samples are looped “three” time for your convenience. We suggest you only listen a couple of times to determine what “you hear”. We will not impression you, “cognitive bias” by telling you what you are “suppose to hear". Instead, we offer our interpretation identified by a dotted yellow line included in the description. Mouse over it the after you made your determination of what is heard and see our interpretation. For the most part, all the samples posted here will be of the best quality unless of course there was signficant purpose to post otherwise.
Sample #1 - The Watson House (Aural Voice Phenomena) This Is What We Hear
This unusual audio capture was heard real-time during an investigation in 2008. Initially we thought the origins might be that of an American Indian but we were later approached during a presentation and told that the capture sounded very much like the previous owner after she had a stroke. This particular capture would be considered AVP instead of EVP which is very rare because it's driven by actual sound waves.

Sample #2 - The Watson House (Electronic Voice Phenomena) This Is What We Hear
A commonly heard EVP but nonetheless the capture was strikingly clear. One might suggest this to be intelligent in nature but during the interactive question and answer audio session it wasn't a reply to the question asked. This wasn't heard at the time of the recording while monitoring.

Sample #3 - The Watson House (Electronic Voice Phenomena) This Is What We Hear
While recording a passive audio session in the depth of the winter months, both Jeremy and myself made note of the water expanding in the pipes likely steam. In between our two words “water” and “yes”e decided to join in with their own thoughts.

Sample #4 - Union District School ( Electronic Voice Phenomena)This Is What We Hear
Although extremely soft in amplitude, buried in the ambient background hiss a young child seems to be humming for a few seconds. Unfortunately audio snippets of this genre, cannot be enhanced by increasing the decibel level. It seems to further immerse the important part of the file. This capture was recorded at 10:41 p.m. with nothing more than the investigators at NEAPRI monitoring during a passive audio session.

Sample #5 - Huguenot House (Electronic Voice Phenomena)This Is What We Hear
From a prior paranormal team NEPVRG (now defunct) when our audio specialist was still working with them, this capture was recorded at The Huguenot House in East Hartford. Analog offers generally a more dynamic sound which is perfectly illustrated with this example.

Sample #6 - Private Residence (Aural Voice Phenomena)This Is What We Hear
This was a real turning point in my study of anomalous audio. I believed radio interference was the source up until this point, but I heard this in my own home 12 minutes after monitoring my recording for the first time. This file is overprocessed because of it being buried at 95 Hz in the noise floor. Generally I use a puritan technique when editing sound files with very little filtering and amplification.

Sample # 7 - Kindree Cemetery (Electronic Voice Phenomena)This Is What We Hear
My first EVP was captured back in Canada at the Kindree Cemetery fourteen seconds after turning on the recorder at 8:59 pm. A rather odd tangent to the history of the Kindree family who lost 7 out of their 12 children not making it past the age of three.
